Whitelisting or Blacklisting an E-mail Address

For the most part, the spam filter is poised to do its job all on its own. We give you the ability to whitelist and blacklist e-mail addresses or domains, though, on the rare occasion that the filter makes an incorrect decision. Your whitelist and blacklist settings are located in the Customer WebMail.

1.

Log in to the Customer WebMail using your e-mail address and mailbox password.

2.

Once logged in, click on Options to access your mailbox options.

3.

In the Options screen, click on the Spam Filtering link.

The Spam Options Screen:

Your whitelist and blacklist are located in the top part of this options screen. You can add and remove items from your lists using these controls.

When to Whitelist: Whitelist an e-mail address or domain if an outside sender's message* is intercepted by the mail filter and either blocked or placed in your message quarantine. You can either enter individual e-mail addresses, or entire domains. You can also, optionally, automatically add senders to your whitelist from the quarantine screen when you release messages to your inbox.

* It should never be necessary to whitelist another user hosted by PortalMedia, as long as they are using our mail system as their outgoing (SMTP) mail server.

When to Blacklist: Spammers frequently change their sending addresses and are known to use random addresses to send their e-mail from. For this reason, it is generally not effective to use the blacklist to try and stop a spammer. If you receive a lot of spam from a particular domain name, however, you can enter the entire domain name into your blacklist and you will no longer receive messages addressed from that domain. Also, use your blacklist to block individuals who may be harassing you. If you are indeed being harassed by a known individual over the Internet, it may also be a good idea to report it to us so that we can also take action on your behalf.
